Transition = The defence is not yet set as they change from offence to defence | Isolation = Self-creating without the aid of a screen. Often it is when the other play-types are broken so the guard needs to create one-on-one (one play for a big that is becoming more prevalent is a fake hand off and drive) | Pick and roll ball-handler = Finished by the player who handled the ball in the pick and roll (includes when the ball-handler shoots without dribbling around the screen / rejects the screen and goes the other way) | Roll/Pop = The player who sets the screen and rolls to the rim, rolls to mid-range, or pops to three-point range | Post up = Catching the ball with back to the basket or the defender on their back (also includes dribbling into a post up, and plays where they turn and face up) | Spot up = Waiting to receive the ball on the perimeter (or mid-range) without using a screen to get open to make the catch (attacking a closeout is also included as well as the catch and shoot jump shots) | Hand off = The player can either run to get a dribble hand-off (typically a guard receiving it from a big), or the teammate can dribble towards the player who then gets the hand off and makes a play off of that advantage created for them | Cut = Includes back door cuts or any cut towards the rim that doesn’t involve using a screen to get open (receiving a dump off pass at the rim is also a cut) | Off Screen = A player runs off a screen to get open and receive a pass (they can shoot immediately, dribble into a pull up/floater, or continue to the rim) | Put back = tip-ins or immediate shots after an offensive rebound (it can even be a 3PA off a long offensive rebound) | Miscellaneous = Other plays that do not fit anywhere else (typically includes end of quarter heaves, illegal screen turnovers, free throws only as a result of the team being in the bonus, free throws from a technical foul, other more random unforced turnovers that occur before getting into a play type) | Halfcourt = All plays that are not logged as transition, put backs, or miscellaneous.

All of these NBL plays are logged by myself so there is consistency in applying the play definitions. There is a ‘grey area’ element or subjectivity to some play-types, so this helps combat that.
